Feeding guide

How much raw should your dog eat?

Pop in your dog's ideal weight, the weight you would like them to be rather than what they weigh today, and we will give you a daily amount to start from.

Adult dogs need around 2 to 3% of their ideal body weight a day. Puppies need 4 to 6% while they grow. Feed dogs over six months twice a day, and three times a day at six months or younger.

This is a guide, not a rule. Age, energy and how much exercise your dog gets all make a difference, so adjust to keep them at a healthy weight. Ask us in the café if you are not sure. For a puppy, use their current weight and recheck each month.

Work it out for your dog

Feed each day (2 to 3% of 20 kg)
400 to 600 g
Split over 2 meals: 200 to 300 g each
That is roughly
2.8 to 4.2 kg a week, or 6 to 9 × 500 g trays

A guide, not a rule. Use the weight you would like your dog to be, and adjust to keep a healthy weight.

Switching to raw

Start simple, in three steps

1

Pick a complete meal

Our complete ranges have the meat, bone, vegetables, oils and supplements already mixed in. Just defrost and serve. No weighing, no supplements, no guesswork.

2

Work out the daily amount

Use the calculator above. Split it over two meals a day, or three for a young puppy. Keep the food frozen and defrost a day ahead in the fridge.

3

Watch and adjust

Every dog is different. If your dog is gaining or losing, nudge the amount up or down. Try the Starter Pack first if you want to see how your dog takes to raw.

Switching to raw

Making the switch, and what to expect

Most dogs take to raw straight away. Here is how to make the switch without fuss, and what is normal in the first couple of weeks.

Most healthy adult dogs

The straight swap

Last bowl of the old food one evening, first raw meal the next morning. Stick to one protein for the first few days, then bring in others one at a time so you can tell what suits your dog.

Sensitive tummies, older dogs, or if you would rather take it slow

The gradual switch, over about a week

Start with a quarter raw and three quarters of the old food, and shift a quarter more every couple of days until it is all raw by day seven or eight. Serve the raw as its own meal rather than mixed into the bowl.

Days 1 to 3

Keen, and drinking less

Raw is around two thirds water, so the water bowl goes down more slowly. A looser stool or two while the gut adjusts is normal.

Week 1 to 2

Smaller, firmer stools

Less waste and less wind, because more of the food is being used. This is the change most owners notice first.

A month in

Coat, skin and weight settle

Give it a month before you judge it. Weigh your dog and nudge the daily amount up or down to hold a healthy weight.

When to ring the vet

If something is not settling

Vomiting or diarrhoea that lasts more than a day or two, or a dog that goes right off food, is a call to the vet, not something to push through.

Why raw

What dog owners tell us

Every dog is different, but customers who switch to raw regularly tell us they notice firmer, smaller stools and less gas; a shinier coat and healthier skin; more energy and a leaner build; better teeth from chewing raw meaty bones; and fewer allergy symptoms once the additives and heavily processed ingredients are gone.

We are not going to tell you raw feeding is a miracle cure. The research is still developing, and what works brilliantly for one dog may not suit another. What we can tell you is that the customers who come to the farm and have made the switch keep coming back, and their dogs look fantastic for it.

Common questions

How do I store it?

Keep it frozen. Defrost in the fridge the day before and use within 3 to 4 days once defrosted. Do not refreeze once thawed.

My dog is overweight. Do I use their current weight?

No, use the weight you would like them to be. That is what the calculator asks for, and it is why the amount comes out lower than you might expect.

Do I need to add anything?

Not to a complete meal. Our complete ranges already have the meat, bone, vegetables, oils and supplements mixed in. If you are unsure about anything, pop in and ask; we will never pressure you into anything.

What about puppies?

Puppies need 4 to 6% of their current body weight a day while they grow, three meals a day at six months or under, then two. Weigh them again each month and recalculate. Our Puppy range is balanced for growth.

Is it safe to handle?

Treat it like any raw meat: clean bowls and surfaces, wash your hands, and keep it cold.

Can I get it delivered?

Yes. Orders are sent frozen by DPD next day, free over £70 and £8.99 under that. Order before 12pm Monday to Thursday for same day dispatch, or collect for free from the farm shop.
